YOU, and the Stress of Event Planning

Are YOU an Event Planner?  Do YOU find your job stressful?   Do the people close to you understand why YOU are stressed out? After all, aren’t YOU just throwing parties?  (I get that one a lot).

Well I am here to validate YOU.  Do not feel isolated in your stress any longer.  Do not feel weak because others do not understand your stress.  Do not doubt your exhaustion at the end of the day.

In a study conducted by Career Cast , Event Planning was listed as the 6th most stressful job in America in 2012.  We find ourselves in the same league as: pilots, military soldiers and firefighters.  And to me, the similarities are obvious.  Event Planners are constantly putting out fires, dodging through the minefield that is client/donor satisfaction, all while attempting to soar to new fundraising heights.  OK, so maybe I am being slightly facetious.  I realize Event Planners aren’t saving people from burning buildings or defending our country.  But it doesn’t make the stress any less real.

Now add to that, the pressure of financial success.  If YOU work in the not-for-profit sector, your events are probably critical to the financial bottom line of your organization.  When YOU are planning a major event for a not-for-profit organization, YOU are always aware that if your event fails it could mean serious financial problems (job loss, budget cuts, not being able to deliver the services your clients have come to expect and need).  Suddenly the weight of everyday/normal deadlines and To-Do lists can feel extremely heavy; every task becomes more crucial.

I am here to tell YOU that it is OK to feel stressed and YOU are not alone.  Here are a few tips on how to manage your stress.

– Do not be afraid to ask for help.

– Strategically plan vacation time so that you can recharge after events or before the planning begins.

– Limit work hours to what is manageable.

– Stay organized, keep priorities in check.

No one was designed to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders, not even YOU, so why do YOU keep trying?
