Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia

YOU, Honouring a Special Person

We’re very fortunate this week in the Fund Development department. For the second week in a row we get to profile a special fundraiser that was held in support of the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

As YOU know, our staff and volunteers have designated this year to celebrating philanthropy.  Everyone interprets philanthropy in a different way but one thing is certain- philanthropy means so much more than donating money.

Today we’re thanking a group of young men who understand philanthropy and have found their own way to celebrate it annually.

This past weekend, over 40 friends and athletes  got together like they have for the past eleven years and did what they love to do- play golf. It was a full day at the Ken-Wo Golf Club in Kentville including an opening reception, breakfast, golf tournament and an awards dinner.

The participants had a great time while raising important funds but most importantly they honoured a special father, friend, and coach.

The John Sperdakes Memorial Tournament started off as an annual baseball game in 2001. In 2005, the event moved to the golf course where it has continued to thrive. The event began raising funds for charities in 2010 and within a short time frame and tremendous support from the local community and golfers managed to raise over $4,000 in the first year.

“We all grew up together playing baseball and John was our coach,” says Ryan O’Flaherty, tournament participant.  “He was a very special friend and coach to all of us. This tournament gives us the chance to get together and remember the good times we had and make new memories while giving back to a cause that has impacted our members.”

And giving back is what they did, with the tournament raising over $6,000 for families in Nova Scotia living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias.

Thank YOU to the organizers, Andrew Bartlett and Chris Sperdakes for choosing the Alzheimer Society as your charity for this special event. Also, a big thank YOU to all of the golfers and sponsors who contributed to help make this day a memorable one.
