Do YOU have a birthday coming up? How would YOU like to celebrate? Maybe your birthday is an occasion you’ve been looking forward to for months. Or, it could be an event YOU would rather not think about at all. However YOU feel about your birthday YOU know friends and family aren’t going to forget about YOU and there’s a good chance they will be giving YOU gifts.

Here’s a creative way to make your birthday more special for YOU while supporting a cause that YOU believe in. If YOU really don’t want  gifts for your birthday, why not turn them into donations? According to an article from The Daily News, giving donations to charity is the new birthday trend. Can you guess who’s making this trend popular in 2012? Kids!

A seven-year-old boy from British Columbia decided that for his birthday party he would ask friends to bring a cash donation in lieu of gifts. The birthday boy ended up raising close to $300 to help make schools safe for kids in Haiti after the earthquake. To read the full story, click here: earthquake. To read the full story click here:

This budding philanthropist is a great example of how easy it can be to raise money for a charity you’re passionate about. The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia was fortunate enough to experience this kind of generosity when a young girl named Aria Publicover came by the office to present the Society a cheque in January 2010. Aria wanted to help and decided to donate all of the money she received on her birthday to our cause.

So, whether you’re turning eight or eighty, YOU can make your birthday even more special for YOU and families living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. If YOU have a birthday coming up, think about how YOU want to spend your day and the gifts or money received from your friends. The feeling YOU get from making a donation might just be the best birthday gift of all.
